Annual Report 2020

From the preface in recent annual report

This is the sixth facility-specific annual report completed by JIPAD. This report comprises the fiscal 2020 annual report that investigated the circumstances of a patient group in the ICU from April 2020 to March 2021 until their discharge from the hospital (up to the end of September 2021). This year a total of 70 centers participated — 13 more than the previous year — and the study investigated more than 50,000 subjects. In addition, this year subjects were recruited during a major wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, this year we have included a COVID- 19 section in addition to the sections that normally appear. This COVID-19 section includes 1,450 subjects from the first wave of the pandemic to the fourth wave and compares them to critical patients with diseases other than COVID-19. COVID-19 patients that contracted the disease since the fourth wave will be included in the coming report, and this will mean that following reports will be able to describe intensive care performed during the pandemic. Portions of this data have already been submitted to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, where they are being used to revise the reimbursements for medical service fees.

The NPO Intensive Care Collaboration Network (URL: https://iconjapan.net) has taken on tasks related to CRISIS (URL: https://crisis.ecmonet.up) as well as some of the tasks performed by JIPAD. The parent organization, the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine, also anticipates this will lead to an expansion of activities. In addition, in September 2021 the project to improve the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare database was revitalized, which led to the approval of a second grant. This funding was used to start a project that will organically integrate DPC data and PICS data with JIPAD data starting in the next fiscal year. We will continue to work toward providing services to all the facilities that certify physicians that specialize in intensive care medicine. We look forward to your continued support.
